How to Use the Ultimate Concordance Tool

  1. Input Text: Paste or type the text you want to analyse into the 'Input Text' area, or upload a .txt file.
  2. Search Options:
    • Search Word: Enter a word or phrase to find it within your text. Leave blank to show all words.
    • Regex Search: Check 'Enable Regex Search' for advanced pattern searching.
  3. Display Options:
    • Sort By: Sort the concordance results by word frequency, or alphabetically
    • Context Window: Set the number of words that are displayed before and after your chosen search word to show the context in which it is used.
    • N-gram Size: Analyze single words (1-gram), pairs of words (2-gram), or sequences of three words (3-gram).
  4. Filtering Options:
    • Exclude Common Words: Remove common English stop words from the analysis.
    • Custom Stop Words: Add your own comma-separated list of words to exclude from the analysis.
    • Minimum Frequency: Set the minimum number of times a word must appear to be included in the results.
    • Frequency Range (%): Filter results to show words within a specific frequency percentage range.
  5. Analyze & Explore Results: The results table shows:
    • Word: The analyzed word or n-gram.
    • Frequency: A count of how often that word appears in the text, as well as what percentage it is of all the words in that text.
    • Context: Example sentences showing the word in use.
    • Distribution: Visual bar showing approximately where the word appears in the text. Click on the bar to see a detailed histogram and fuller context list.
  6. Export: Use the buttons to copy results as CSV, or export full results as CSV or JSON files.
  7. Reset: 'Reset All Settings' clears all inputs and settings.

What is a Concordance?
A concordance is a list of words in a text, showing the number of times each word is used in the text, along with its immediate surrounding context. It has many uses, for example to spot words and expressions that are overused in a particular piece of writing.
What are Stop Words?
Stop words are common words (like "the", "is", "and") that are often removed from text analysis to focus on more meaningful words. You can choose to exclude default stop words, and add your own custom ones.
Is my data secure?
Yes, all text analysis happens entirely within your browser. Your text does not leave your computer.
What languages are supported?
The tool has been optimized for English. Results for other languages may vary.
Can I analyze large texts?
Yes, this tool supports texts of up to 1,000,000 characters, or approx. 160,000 words. Please note that processing time may be longer for very large documents.
